Abstract

Extended Abstract

Introduction and Objectives: Marital intimacy is one of the most fundamental components of the quality of spousal relationships and one of the most important predictors of family satisfaction, stability, and health. Psychological research has demonstrated that this construct is closely associated with various dimensions of marital functioning, including communication quality, adjustment, mental health, and marital stability. Despite the proliferation of studies in this field, there remains no theoretical consensus regarding the nature, definition, and dimensions of marital intimacy. In the psychological literature, intimacy has been conceptualized variously as an emotional experience, an interactive characteristic, or, from certain perspectives, a basic human need. Moreover, the proposed models for the dimensions of intimacy differ substantially from one another and have suggested divergent components for it—a situation that has led to ambiguity in the operational definition, measurement, and explanation of this construct.
A review of domestic studies also indicates that the majority of research has focused on factors affecting intimacy, educational and enhancement interventions, or the development of measurement tools based on conventional psychological frameworks. Although efforts have been made in recent years to utilize Islamic texts in explaining marital intimacy, the conceptualization of this construct based on the epistemological foundations of Islam still faces theoretical ambiguities, particularly in determining its conceptual equivalent, distinguishing it from related notions such as affection (maḥabbat), mawaddah, uns, and ulfah, and clarifying the structure of its dimensions.
Accordingly, the aim of the present study is to conceptualize marital intimacy based on the verses of the Holy Qur’an and the narrations of the Infallibles (peace be upon them), to identify the semantic core and the precise equivalent of this concept in Islamic sources, and to explain its dimensions and components within a coherent conceptual model—a model that can provide a theoretical foundation for developing family psychology research, designing indigenous assessment tools, and formulating educational and counseling interventions grounded in Islamic teachings.
Method: The present study, conducted with the aim of conceptualizing marital intimacy within the framework of Islamic teachings, employed the method of qualitative content analysis of religious texts. Data were collected through a systematic review of lexical sources, verses of the Holy Qur’an, authentic narrations (aḥādīth), interpretive sources (tafāsīr), and the scientific literature related to marital intimacy. The analysis process was carried out in five consecutive stages.
In the first stage, through systematic observation, the scope of the study was delineated, and equivalents, cognate terms, and relevant evidence concerning the concept of intimacy in Islamic and psychological sources were identified and collected. In the second stage, the selected sources were read repeatedly and in depth so that the lexical and conceptual usages of the terms in different contexts—with attention to the context of the verses, narrations, lexical analyses, and exegetical views—could be clarified. In the third stage, the extracted concepts were classified and organized on the basis of semantic similarities, internal relations, and levels of abstraction, without imposing a predetermined theoretical framework, and the main categories were formed.
In the fourth stage, the validity of the findings was evaluated using the cumulative qualitative method (QIC-KV), based on the principle of “cumulative conjecture” (tarākum al-ẓunūn). In this stage, the findings were assessed according to two criteria: (1) soundness (matīn būdan), including traceability to sources and internal coherence, and (2) usefulness (mufīd būdan), including psychological explanatory power and theoretical applicability; only concepts with sufficient support were retained in the final analysis. In the final stage, the validated concepts were integrated, their relationships were explained, and ultimately the conceptual model of marital intimacy was formulated and reported by determining its semantic core and main dimensions within the semantic system of Islam.
Results: The findings of the study showed that one of the major challenges in the literature on marital intimacy is the confusion of this concept with notions such as affection (maḥabbat), mawaddah, uns, ulfah, and love (ʿishq). A comparative examination of lexical sources and Islamic texts revealed that the closest equivalent of the word intimacy in Arabic is ḥamīmiyyah, derived from the triliteral root ḥ-m-m. The analysis of authoritative dictionaries, the verses of the Holy Qur’an, and the narrations indicated that, despite the diverse usages of this root in different meanings, the shared semantic core of all of them is “closeness, nearness, and deep connection” (qurb). This closeness appears in human relationships as emotional proximity, kinship, and existential connection, and in other usages as approaching the utmost intensity or effect. Accordingly, “closeness” (qurb) was identified as the organizing core of the concept of marital intimacy within the framework of Islamic thought.
Based on this semantic core, the systematic analysis of verses and narrations related to spousal relations showed that marital intimacy in Islam is a multidimensional construct manifested in seven interrelated dimensions: physical, emotional, cognitive, communicative, sexual, participatory, and spiritual intimacy. Each of these dimensions is supported by Qur’anic and narrational evidence and includes indicators such as peaceful cohabitation (sukūn), affection and mercy (mawaddah wa raḥmah), mutual knowledge and consultation (shūrā), living together in kindness (muʿāsharah bi al-maʿrūf) and dialogue, lawful sexual relations accompanied by dignity and divine intention, cooperation and shared responsibility in married life, and companionship in the path of spiritual growth.
Validation of the findings using the cumulative qualitative method (QIC-KV) and expert evaluation also showed that the extracted seven-dimensional structure possessed desirable conceptual coherence, religious traceability, and psychological explanatory capacity. After incorporating the suggested revisions, it was finalized as the conceptual model of marital intimacy.
Discussion and Conclusion: The findings of this research demonstrated that the concept of marital intimacy in Islamic sources cannot be equated merely with concepts such as affection (maḥabbat), mawaddah, uns, or love (ʿishq); rather, its closest conceptual equivalent is ḥamīmiyyah, which, based on analysis of the root ḥ-m-m, is grounded in the meaning of “closeness and nearness.” This finding provides a new basis for redefining marital intimacy within the framework of Islamic thought and shows that intimacy, before being a set of emotions or behaviors, is a kind of “existential closeness” (qurb-e vojūdī) between husband and wife that manifests in different domains of married life. From this perspective, the physical, emotional, cognitive, communicative, sexual, participatory, and spiritual dimensions are not independent and scattered components, but rather interwoven layers of a single reality centered on closeness.
This formulation differs fundamentally from common psychological models, because whereas many theories explain intimacy mainly at the level of emotional experience, psychological need, or interpersonal interactions, the present model, by relying on the semantic and anthropological foundations of Islam, offers a conceptual and normative framework for understanding intimacy. Accordingly, desirable closeness in marital life is not limited to the intensity of emotional attachment, but is linked to moral growth, responsibility, tranquility (sakīnah), affection (mawaddah), mercy (raḥmah), and spiritual elevation.
Overall, the proposed seven-dimensional model, supported by lexical, Qur’anic, and narrational foundations, can provide an indigenous and coherent basis for developing family psychology theories within the Islamic framework. It also has considerable potential for designing indigenous intimacy assessment tools, developing educational and counseling programs, and conducting empirical studies to examine the relationships among the various dimensions of marital intimacy and their consequences for family quality of life.
